Calabria Saint Macaire

calabria_macaire

"Saint Macaire is such an obscure grape variety that you are unlikely to find

mention of it in the key wine reference books, though one website refers to it as

"one of the red grapes of Bordeaux that became extinct there but has been

resurrected

in California where it may be used in Meritage reds.' I met

some vigerons from the sweet wine appellation of Saint Macaire at Spain's

Vignoble Exhibition in Jerez and, in June, drove past their town near Bordeaux's

Entre Deux Mers region. That's the kind of obscure trivia that I'm driven to

when I need to report on Bill Calabria's planting of Australia's only two hectares

of Saint Macaire. The wine has won Blue Gold when judged with food at the

2005 Sydney International Top 100 and I found it fascinating in the Quaff

tastings. This Saint Macaire is fragrant with some stalky notes, is rich and

powerfully flavoured with cherry ripe characters and velvety texture. Bold and

intriguing." Peter Forrestal, 2007 Quaff

"Rated 90/100. Good colour, very unusual spicy chocolate fruit characters,

almost floral. An extremely rare variety once planted in Bordeaux." James

Halliday, 2007 Australian wine companion

TASTING NOTE

Calabria Saint Macaire is an intense deep red colour with a purple hue. It displays a fragrant nose of violets, rose petals and spice that are unique attributes of Saint Macaire. The full bodied palate exhibiting ripe fruit is spicy with well integrated vanillin oak characters. The palate is soft with a warm finish of great length with fine grained tannins. Excellent to drink now, this wine will age well in the medium to long term.

FOOD ACCOMPANIMENTS

Tapas dishes. Roast lamb and game with plenty of fresh herbs, especially thyme, rosemary and sage. Also a great accompaniment with vintage cheddar.
